Laser Hair Removal frequently asked questions

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated beams of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles, which damages the follicle and inhibits future hair growth.

When performed by a qualified professional, laser hair removal is generally safe. However, there are some risks associated with the procedure, such as skin irritation, changes in skin pigmentation, and the possibility of burns or blisters. It’s important to undergo treatment with a trained and experienced practitioner to minimize these risks.

Our lasers offer us a choice of wavelengths and your therapist will select the one most suited to your skin type.

The number of sessions required for optimal results varies depending on factors such as hair colour, hair thickness, skin type, and the area being treated. On average, most people need between 6 to 8 sessions spaced several weeks apart to achieve significant hair reduction. Top ups are likely to be needed once you complete a course, but your hair should be significantly reduced.

Laser hair removal may cause some discomfort or a mild stinging sensation during treatment, often described as feeling like a rubber band snapping against the skin. However, most people find the discomfort to be tolerable, and some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. During the treatment we cool your skin using a device which generates refrigerated air, this can help make the treatment more comfortable.

Some redness and slight swelling like goose bumps is often seen in the treatment area, this is quite normal. A more severe reaction such as burns, blisters or a grazed appearance may occur resulting in temporary changes to skin pigmentation, however this is rare and your therapist will discuss this at your consultation.

Prior to your laser hair removal session, it’s important to avoid sun exposure, sun beds and the use of fake/spray tans. Also no waxing, plucking and epilating. Shaving is recommended before a treatment as the hairs just need to be visible at dark dots at the surface of the skin.

Most people can resume normal activities immediately after laser hair removal, downtime is usually minimal . However, you may experience some slight tenderness, temporary redness and swelling in the treated area, this usually subsides within a few hours. We recommend that you avoid getting further direct heat in the area, so avoid saunas, steam rooms and intensive workouts/exercise on the day of your treatment.

Laser hair removal provides long lasting hair reduction but we would never claim permanent removal. Maintenance top up sessions are likely to be needed periodically and these are charged at a discounted rate, your therapist will discuss this with you.

We can treat 16-18 year olds on production of a GP letter We do not treat during preganancy, individuals with certain medical conditions, or those with certain skin types or hair colors.
